Found exclusively throughout the Americas, the precious American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a remarkable reptile that ranges from the northern tip of South America through the lush jungles of Central America and into the southern reaches of the United States. American crocs are recorded as far north as Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast and, more recently, Satellite Beach on the East Coast, with a historic sighting as far north as Virginia.

The presence of the American crocodile is essential for the health of Florida’s ecosystems. As an apex predator, they help regulate other wildlife populations. As a "keystone species," they serve as indicators of the health and balance of both freshwater and estuarine habitats. With an estimated total population of around 10,000 and fewer than 5,000 breeding individuals, these remarkable crocodiles are twice as rare as polar bears! Their very survival as a species ironically depends on their most formidable predator – humans.

So, as we marvel at the American crocodile's grace and power, we must also recognize our role in protecting this remarkable species. By supporting conservation efforts, we can ensure that these ancient creatures thrive in their natural habitats for generations to come!

Croc on,

Cherie
